I have led workshops on networking, coached people on how to do it effectively, and have participated in networking workshops myself. Despite all this, networking in large groups is just not one my favorite things to do. Networking with new people can be scary, anxiety-filled, boring, and possibly intimidating if you don't approach it with the right perspective. Although, networking with strangers in a large group might not be a natural fit for my personality, I have learned how to appreciate the experience and have met some wonderful people in the process.YOUR PURPOSE FOR BEING THERE
First I will start with, why you shouldn't be there. Don't go in with the mindset of trying to sell your services or products to the people at this event. I recently attended a networking event with a great group of women. Unfortunately, one woman had the wrong approach and started pushing her product at me within the first 60 seconds of meeting her. She didn't bother taking the time to build rapport, learn about what I do, or identify any need. Of course, I wouldn't get offended by someone pitching their product to me at a networking event, but if I just needed a product - I could go online and find it. Professional networking is about putting a face to a product/service, getting to know them and their needs, and providing a solution that will help their business be even more successful or efficient. There should be a reason I would choose to buy or do business with you and not with someone or a product I find online. Next, you ARE there to make a meaningful connection to others. You are also there to consider opportunities for you or your business. You might find other people who offer complimentary services/products and this could be a new addition or marketing strategy to your business.Lastly, you are not just there to learn about other services/products from others or promote your own to the people in the room, but you are there to make "genuine" business connections. You have now marketed what you do to anyone your connections might come in contact with and may need your services/products. Don't look at the people at this event as who could use what you have to offer, but view this opportunity as a way to be a verbal marketing piece that could spread way beyond the number of people you could reach in your lifetime.
Here is to recap what professional networking is in a nutshell:
Making meaningful, genuine, and lasting connections with others that will promote an exchange of business now or in the future.
So, enjoy the experience and watch your professional career or business blossom!
