Should You Really Be Wearing That Jewelry?

Today’s article is dedicated to fashion……..I recently attended a Stella & Dot party in Katy, Texas and was astonished to see the variety of beautiful jewelry pieces for many types of personalities. The host and seller had a few different rooms set up with well-staged jewelry for you to come in and try on without any obligation to buy. The jewelry was categorized by metal tones and colors. It was like watching kids in a candy store – I have to admit that I felt like a kid in a candy store.

How do you know if you are selecting the right jewelry for you? Are you attracted to the color, metal tone, size, shape, etc.? Is what you are attracted to really what looks best on you? This is what I find to be most challenging for woman. They are attracted to a piece that may look great on their sister or favorite celebrity, but it is not the best fit for them. Typically, one of two things happen. This piece sits in their closet never worn, or they sport this item and everyone compliments how great this piece of jewelry is but “they” get quickly forgotten.

There are several things to consider when selecting the right piece of jewelry you are going to wear:

1. Jewelry should be used to enhance your look, outfit, complexion, etc. It could also be used to camouflage a part of you that you may not be thrilled with. If you wear a piece of jewelry that is the first thing noticed when someone looks at you, you are now second to the jewelry and have picked the wrong piece. You want someone to pay attention to you, not distracted by or only focused on this great jewelry that you are wearing.

3. Does this particular piece match your Fashion Personality? There are several universal fashion personalities that tell people a little bit about us by how we dress, the colors we choose, and how we put things together. It doesn’t matterwhich one you are, but it does matter that what you wear is consistent with the message you want portrayed and also fits within the context of your environment . I believe in being YOU at all times. There is always a way to bring out your fashion personality in any environment- it just takes some practice. Are you a Sporty/Alluring and you keep buying Dramatic or Romantic pieces? The story of your look should all match.

3. Does the color or tone of the jewelry go with your personal coloring? Should you be wearing gold, white gold, or bronze tones? Maybe you should be wearing gold tones but should it be matte or shiny? Is the turquoise in that necklace going to brighten your complexion or dull it?

4. Does the shape (rounded or angular) of the jewelry go with your face shape? Are you working with the Principle of Relatedness? If you are looking for a harmonious look, the shape of the jewelry should be similar to the shape of your face.

5. Is the necklace vertically balanced to the proportions of your face? There a couple ways to determine if the necklace length is balanced with your face. Take the length of your face from your hairline to your chin (if you wear bangs, start at the end of the bang). That measurement will be the first balance point from your chin down to your chest (i.e. face measured 7 inches, then you could wear a necklace 7 inches from your chin down). Another balance point would be the length form the widest part of your face to your chin.

Other items to consider would be the scale or size of the piece to your body shape, the event you would wear this piece to, etc. There are many things to consider when selecting your best pieces of jewelry. I would love to hear how you go about selecting your jewelry style!
