What to Buy for Valentines Day

So Valentines Day is here again and always the question....what is the right gift for your loved one? You see or hear about a lot of different gift ideas but depending on the length of time you have been dating someone, which gift you choose does make a difference. Let's go through some different scenarios and an appropriate gift for each.

Scenario 1
You have been dating someone for less than a month. You are both really into each other but the relationship is still casual in nature. If you are a female you could go with a funny or cutsie-NOT sappy- card and a case of his favorite beer or CD. For her, you could purchase a bottle of her favorite wine or flowers. It doesn't always have to be the traditional dozen roses either- orchids or my favorite, tiger lillies are also a great choice!

Scenario 2
You have been dating for around a year and the love word has definitely been tossed around quite a few times. Depending on your budget, most women enjoy a nice spa treatment (either a massage, pedicure, manicure, or facial). For him, take him out to one of his favorite restaurants and splurge!

Scenario 3
You have been married for at least a few years- okay, now we are passed the trying to impress stage, right? Well, yes we are not trying to impress as much as we are truly trying to make our loved one feel special and remind them of how much we are grateful to have them in our life. On these valentine's day it is not about the monetary gifts for some, as it is about the genuine gestures done that say "I love you". Don't get me wrong, women still enjoy getting flowers or like to be taken to a nice meal but more so, the reminder that they are still that special one in their life is what counts. Some examples for either the man or woman could be:

- Making the other person their favorite breakfast or dinner and having them on special serving dishes
- Putting a single rose on the pillow beside them with a special valentine card to welcome their morning
- Taking on a responsibility for that day that the other person normally assumes (washing the dishes, shoveling the snow, etc.)
- Enjoying a home cooked meal over candlelight - especially if this is not something that you would normally do
- Getting a cake and putting "In celebration of our marriage- you mean so much to me", or something to this effect and bringing it out after dinner as a surprise
- As cheesy as this might sound to some- writing a sweet poem and putting in a frame for them

Under no circumstance should you just skip the holiday all together just because you have been married for awhile. Even if the husband or wife's states they do not want to celebrate it, they would still enjoy and appreciate a card recognizing your commitment to the relationship and love you still hold for them. Also, even though Valentine's day is a day for lovers, it can also mean a lot to do something special for the kids. They love getting a card, chocolate, or even flowers to let them know how much they mean to you.

Happy Valentine's Day!
