Color: To Wear or Not To Wear

I know I have mentioned the show "What Not To Wear" before. I have to say that it is not a show that I love or make sure to record but rather, a show that I tell myself I don't like. However, it is one of those shows that once the channel lands there, I can't seem to switch channels because I am waiting in anticipation as to how this makeover is going to turn out. It's TV, so you have to take the good with the bad and know what purpose the show serves- to entertain! Well, it definitely gets me all revved up so I guess that can be entertaining.

Recently, they had on a very attractive redhead. She used to be a famous dancer and now owns her own dancing studio (I didn't catch the very beginning). She looked pretty good to begin with but her friends had her on the show because all she ever wore was BLACK. Now, this was a woman after my own heart because I love black too and it is a great color for my personal coloring. Their job was to make sure that she added
color to her wardrobe. Here she was, this flaming hot redhead wearing black from head to toe. Some of us reading this may not see the problem with this scenario.

Yes, many people who wear black are trying to stay inconspicuous and hide in the background. The problem with this is that if black shouldn't be in your color palette, then you actually will stand out and it will have the opposite effect. The clothes we wear should excite us but not overpower us. When someone compliments the color of your shirt- ask yourself if they liked the color or you in it. Color should enhance our personal coloring and not wash us out or showcase dark circles or lines on our faces.

Okay, back to Stacey and Clinton and this beautiful redhead. I was just baffled at some of the colors they had her purchase and taught her were good for her. Fuchsia is NEVER a good color for a red head. It was interesting because her favorite outfit at the end and their favorite outfit happened to be a pewter-colored suit paired with a beautiful green that made her eyes pop out.

If you are a redhead or know one you can give them some pointers on color:
  • Silver or white gold is probably not the best color choice for jewelry
  • If they want to add a bright pop of color try teal, aqua, turquoise, or lime
  • Colors that are too cool will not be the most flattering (e.g. hot pink, violet, powder pink, lavender, etc.)
Color can affect our mood and how others react to us. Be sure to think twice before just grabbing a shirt at the store that you love because of the way it fits you without considering if the color is best for you!
